Prosoft Engineering, authors of Data Rescue, are about the worst company I have ever dealt with. I purchased Data Rescue 5 in January 2019. However, now, on launch i get the following message: "Failed to validate serial number. Please verify you are connected to the internet." Basically they have disabled the serial number that I paid for with good money (Let me tell you it wasn't cheap and the icing on the cake is that it is limited to 5 disks, something not made clear at point of sale). I contacted their support as I had an urgent issue to fix, but despite their (automated) assurance that I would hear from them soon, I never did. From what I have read online, they deactivate your software once a new version is released. Anyway I purchased Disk Drill the same day and it is 100 times faster than Data Rescue. If anyone reading this plans to trust Data Rescue with their precious data, think again. You pay like $100 for ultra-limited, clunky and slow software that is more like rented to users than an outright purchase. Dishonesty akin to Wild West snake oil vendors.

v6.0.8 is out. Dated July, 2023. They do have a "Standard License" 30-day subscription for $79. The free TRIAL version provides: "- Scan and Preview lost files
- Free Data recovery up to 1GB (New Users Only)" - - Alternative I use: Disk Drill.

Better and cheaper idea: Follow the #1 Rule of Computing and make daily BACKUPS, both local AND off-site. If you lose a file, get it back via your backup. If you require more up-to-the-minute file recovery, match your backup schedule to be up-to-the-minute! There are also other recovery apps to consider...

The Worst
sold me a version not suitable for my osx then wouldn't replace when it was their mistake.
tried on a friend w/ lower system found a bunch of individual unidentifiable unnamed pieces of files by type. useless p.o.s. worst customer service. AVOID.

When I first bought DR4 years ago it worked great. I was able to recover data with it, no problem. It worked up through 10.14 Mojave and I was happy with it. Then it suddenly stopped working. It couldn't contact the licensing servers. I emailed Prosoft support and they gave me a link for an updated version. Okay, fine.
This updated version would not work on anything later than Mac OS 10.10. Even though they were selling it up until the release of 10.13 and were advertising it as compatible with the latest version of Mac OS, so it should at least be functional in 10.12. They had switched off the licensing servers, then gave paying customers a kneecapped version and told me to just pay to upgrade to DR5 instead. I can't help but think that was a deliberate move to try and milk more money out of people.
Fat chance. This is an unbelievably awful move and probably grounds for a class-action lawsuit, but I'm not a lawyer. In any case, I didn't take their lousy upgrade offer and I will never purchase another product from this horrible scum company for as long as I live.

Very disappointing to find out your old reg.numbers do not work, and a pirate price for new version without any upgrade discount. F...k them! I do hope they go bankrupt!
